I/I Mitigation Project – City of New Berlin

In an effort to reduce the infiltration and inflow (I/I) of clear water into the sanitary sewer system and eliminate basement backups, the City of New Berlin contracted with Crispell-Snyder for Pilot Infiltration/Inflow Project. In this project, Crispell-Snyder, along with homeowners and City staff, used a number of techniques to identify possible sources I/I. Crispell-Snyder then summarized all defects found on the private side of the system in the water main.  The findings were then analyzed to determine which sources of I/I were the ones most responsible for causing sewer backups during heavy rainfalls. Crispell-Snyder then estimated the cost to fix each of the identified I/I sources and developed a rehabilitation plan. A private property rehabilitation program was outlined including grants and loans for the study area.
